Neelix finds a colony of Talaxians hiding in an asteroid field, and with it the chance of a home he thought he had lost for ever.

As the crew celebrates First Contact Day, Voyager picks up signs of Talaxians living in an asteroid field. Neelix, Tom and Tuvok go to investigate, but their shuttle is shot down by miners who claim the asteroid. Rescued by the Talaxians, Neelix grows close to Dexa, a widow, and to young Brax. He learns that the settlers built their home out of their own dismantled ships and want to stay, but the miners are determined to force them out and the Talaxians have no way to fight back. Neelix devises a defence using shield technology and, with quiet help from the Delta Flyer, drives the miners away. Torn between Voyager and his own people, Neelix decides to stay. Janeway names him Starfleet's official ambassador to the Delta Quadrant, and the crew lines the corridor to see him off.
