Seven secretly uses the holodeck to rehearse the human life she has never had, including a romance with Chakotay.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Seven explores her humanity in private holodeck simulations, practising social situations such as a baby shower and a romantic relationship with a holographic Chakotay. In reality she turns down an invitation to the real baby shower for Tom and B'Elanna. Meanwhile, Voyager strays into an area seeded with warheads, and Janeway asks Seven to find a way to detect them. Seven spends more and more time in her simulations and begins to neglect her duties, arriving late at her post. When a warhead strikes the ship, the consequences are real. Seven later collapses, and the Doctor finds that one of her Borg implants contains a failsafe that shuts her down when her emotions run too high. He offers to remove it, but Seven declines and returns to her work, putting her experiment with feelings aside for now.
- 01Seven's emotional experiences can be traced back to the “Unimatrix Zero” two-parter.
- 02The score includes Chopin's Nocturne in E minor, Opus 72, and his Barcarolle, Opus 60.
- 03The episode helped lay the groundwork for the Chakotay and Seven romance explored in “Natural Law” and the finale, “Endgame”.
