B'Elanna Torres discovers she is pregnant when she almost faints on duty. The Doctor finds the baby healthy apart from a spinal curvature common in Klingon females, a condition B'Elanna herself had corrected as a child, and suggests genetic treatment. When B'Elanna sees that her daughter will have Klingon forehead ridges, she is shaken. Haunted by memories of being teased for her mixed heritage and of her father walking out, she asks the Doctor to remove her daughter's Klingon genes altogether. Tom and the Doctor object, and Janeway is unable to settle the matter. The Doctor then unexpectedly agrees, but Tom finds that his program has been tampered with and stops the procedure. B'Elanna finally admits her real fear: that Tom will leave her as her father did. Tom promises to stay, and B'Elanna asks the Doctor to be her daughter's godfather.
