While Voyager undergoes a long-postponed maintenance overhaul, the Delta Flyer is caught up in a fight between a Kraylor vessel and the Annari, and comes to the Kraylor ship's defence. With its command crew dead, Harry Kim takes charge of the vessel and names it Nightingale, after the famous wartime nurse. He believes the Kraylor are carrying vaccines home through an Annari blockade. In fact they are scientists developing a cloaking technology to break the blockade, and they have kept the truth from him. Despite the deception, Harry stays committed to the ship and its people, and with guidance from Seven of Nine he begins to grow as a leader. Nightingale breaks free of an Annari tractor beam at the blockade and reaches the Kraylor planet. Back on Voyager, Harry admits that he needs more experience before he is ready to command a starship.
- 01Directed by LeVar Burton, The Next Generation's Geordi La Forge, who had previously directed Garrett Wang in “Timeless”.
- 02Kim tells Terek that Voyager lost “over a dozen” crew in “Caretaker”, the closest the series comes to giving a figure for those losses.
- 03When Janeway says Voyager does not take sides, Kim cites two occasions when it did: the “Unimatrix Zero” two-parter and “Dragon's Teeth”.
