Paris and Kim test the rebuilt Delta Flyer in an impromptu race against a pilot named Irina, then beam her to safety when a gas leak threatens her ship. Irina is training for a rally that marks a fragile peace between four species once at war, and Paris and Kim persuade Janeway to enter. B'Elanna is hurt that Tom seems to care more about the race than the time they had planned together, and confides her doubts about the relationship to Neelix. In the end she takes Harry's place as Tom's co-pilot. During the race Irina's co-pilot is injured, and Harry discovers that Irina is a saboteur determined to wreck the peace, with bombs planted on her own ship and on the Delta Flyer. With danger mounting, Tom proposes to B'Elanna. They eject the rigged warp core into a nebula, where it explodes harmlessly, and the episode ends with the newlyweds leaving on their honeymoon.
