Seven of Nine is troubled by vivid dreams of a forest. She discovers it is Unimatrix Zero, a virtual realm that drones with a rare recessive gene can visit during regeneration, where they become their individual selves again. Seven has been there before, and Axum, a man she once loved there, asks for her help. The Borg Queen regards Unimatrix Zero as a disease and is hunting down and destroying the drones who visit it. Its inhabitants have devised a nanovirus to hide themselves, but it can only be released in the physical world. While Seven struggles with the feelings it reawakens in her, Janeway resolves to help, and the Queen threatens to send killer drones into Unimatrix Zero unless the resistance ends. Janeway, Tuvok and B'Elanna board a Borg cube to carry out the plan, and the season ends with the away team captured and assimilated by the Collective.
