When Voyager powers down for a planned outage, the Borg children wake early from regeneration. Stuck with them in the dark, Neelix tells a story to answer their questions about the restricted area on Deck Twelve. Some time ago, he says, Voyager accidentally picked up a strange entity while passing through a nebula. Systems began to fail one after another, from navigation and communications to life support. Crew members were injured and the Doctor went offline. Janeway eventually managed to communicate with the presence and learned that it wanted to return to its nebula. When the crew found the nebula had collapsed and vanished, the entity turned hostile, draining the oxygen and claiming Voyager as its new home. Janeway persuaded it that she was needed to keep the ship running and promised to find it another nebula. Neelix finally insists he made the whole story up, though the children admit it frightened them all the same.
