Voyager encounters a graviton ellipse, a vast anomaly that roams through subspace and destroys what it engulfs. Inside it is the Ares IV, a command module from Earth's 2032 Mars mission that vanished with its pilot, Lt John Kelly. Chakotay, Paris and Seven set out to recover the module in the Delta Flyer. When the ellipse collides with a dark matter asteroid, Chakotay is badly hurt and the shuttle is crippled. With the ellipse about to return to subspace, Seven boards the Ares IV to salvage parts. Listening to Kelly's logs, she learns how he kept gathering scientific data to the very end, and she gains a new respect for the human drive to explore. She brings back his data and his body, and the Flyer escapes. Kelly is given a funeral, with Seven delivering the eulogy.
