Returning from a diplomatic mission in the Delta Flyer, Tuvok detects a cloaked presence and is struck down by an unseen alien. The attack leaves his brain damaged: he loses much of his memory and his Vulcan control over emotion. While Janeway works with Naroq, an alien investigator chasing a cloaked species known as the Ba'Neth, Neelix devotes himself to Tuvok's recovery, finally getting the friendship he has long wanted. The new Tuvok is curious, gentle and openly emotional, and he discovers a love of baking and jazz. The crew need the information locked in his mind to find the Ba'Neth, and Tuvok fears losing the person he has become. Encouraged by Janeway, he finally recalls the cloaking frequency and pipes it in icing on a cake. Voyager uses it to expose a hidden Ba'Neth station. Tuvok recovers his Vulcan self, but keeps a little of the emotional side he discovered.
