A crippled Malon freighter full of toxic waste is about to explode, and B'Elanna's quick temper may be the only thing that can stop it, if the thing lurking in its corridors does not stop her first.

Tuvok is teaching B'Elanna Torres to meditate to help her control her temper. Then Voyager picks up escape pods from a damaged Malon freighter loaded with theta radiation waste, which will explode within hours and poison space for three light years. Chakotay, B'Elanna and Neelix board the freighter with two Malon survivors, Fesek and Pelk, to try to restore its containment. Pelk is killed by something the Malon call the Vihaar, a figure from their folklore. With the radiation too intense to stay long, Tuvok suggests pushing the ship into the corona of a nearby star, where the explosion can be contained. The Vihaar turns out to be a Malon worker horribly mutated by years of exposure to theta radiation, who tries to stop the plan. B'Elanna channels her anger to defeat him, the team is beamed away, and the freighter is destroyed safely inside the star.
