After Seven is caught studying Tom and B'Elanna's love life too closely, the Doctor offers to coach her in human courtship, and makes a private bet with Tom that she will bring a date to an upcoming reception. Their lessons move from holodeck practice to real dates with crew members, though a dance with Lt Chapman ends with him injured, and Seven decides she is unsuited to romance. Meanwhile Neelix escorts Tomin, an ambassador from the strict Kadi, who samples everything Voyager offers and ends up drunk before his superior arrives. Seven and the Doctor help sober him up. As the lessons go on, the Doctor realises he has fallen for his pupil. When Seven learns of the bet she is hurt and leaves the reception. She later thanks him for his help, but the Doctor cannot bring himself to tell her how he feels, and he is left alone with the Gershwin song.
