With Voyager trapped in a region of chaotic space, Chakotay starts to see and hear things that are not there, and the boxing ring of his holodeck hobby becomes a battleground for his mind.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Chakotay has taken up boxing on the holodeck, coached by a holographic Boothby, and loses badly to an alien opponent. Soon afterwards Voyager is trapped in chaotic space, a region where the laws of physics break down. Chakotay begins hallucinating: he sees boxing gloves, hears voices, and lashes out on the bridge. The Doctor finds that a dormant genetic disorder in his family, one which Chakotay has always feared, has been triggered. Visions of his grandfather draw him back into the boxing ring again and again. Chakotay comes to realise that aliens living in chaotic space are trying to talk to him, and that his mind has turned their contact into the boxing match he was already thinking about. Rather than resist, he steps back into the ring, faces the alien boxer, and receives the instructions he needs. He reconfigures the ship and leads Voyager out to safety.
- 01Carlos Palomino, who plays Chakotay's sparring partner, is a professional boxer who also served as Robert Beltran's boxing trainer.
- 02The boxing idea came from a dinner conversation between Robert Beltran, Kenneth Biller, Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky.
