Seven of Nine returns from an away mission with young Naomi Wildman to find the crew celebrating the discovery of a wormhole that leads directly to the Alpha Quadrant. Messages from home bring perfect news for everyone, from career offers to personal reconciliations. Seven, unaffected by the general joy, notices that the captain's logs show early doubts about the readings that were then forgotten, and her suspicions grow as the crew stop her from investigating. Eventually they try to put her in stasis, and she is knocked out as the ship heads into the anomaly. When she wakes, Voyager has been swallowed by a vast creature that lures ships with telepathic illusions. Seven contacts Qatai, a hunter whose own ship is trapped and who has spent decades pursuing the beast. Together they force the creature to release both ships. Voyager leaves warning beacons behind, while Qatai resumes his long hunt.
- 01Story writer Bill Prady said the idea came from a dream, while he was working on the sitcom Dharma & Greg.
- 02Prady's original pitch was built around a giant pitcher plant, an idea kept as the metaphor for the creature.
- 03W. Morgan Sheppard (Qatai) played Ira Graves in TNG's “The Schizoid Man” and the prison commandant on Rura Penthe in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
