The Hirogen have captured Voyager and turned it into a hunting ground. Neural interfaces suppress the crew's identities and cast them as characters in holodeck simulations, where they are hunted again and again, and the Doctor is forced to treat the wounded. Janeway, having just died as a Klingon warrior, is recast as Katrine, who runs a bar and leads a Resistance cell in occupied France in 1944, alongside Tuvok as her barman and Seven as a singer. Torres is Brigitte, pregnant by a German officer, Neelix is a baker carrying messages, and Chakotay and Paris are American soldiers advancing on the town. Harry Kim, kept working on the bridge, secretly helps the Doctor free Janeway and Seven from their implants. The Hirogen leader, Karr, hopes the simulations can teach his people a new way of life. As Part I ends, holographic explosives blast through the holodeck walls and the American troops pour into Voyager's corridors.
