Janeway, now free of her neural interface, and Seven work to release the rest of the crew, who still believe they are French Resistance fighters and American soldiers in a holographic, Nazi-occupied France spread across several decks. When the interfaces fail, the crew remember who they are, but the Hirogen hold much of the ship. Their leader, Karr, reveals his real aim: holodeck technology could let his scattered, dwindling people hunt without wiping themselves out, and he proposes a truce. But his subordinate Turanj has absorbed the ideology of the Nazi characters he plays. He shoots Karr dead and hunts Janeway through the damaged ship, until she kills him. The Doctor and Neelix merge programs to unleash holographic Klingons on the Nazis, and Kim finally overloads the holodecks to end the simulation. Janeway gives the surviving Hirogen an optronic data core so they can build holodecks of their own.
