Voyager's crew are falling victim to bizarre ailments, from sudden ageing to strange markings, and only Seven of Nine and the Doctor seem able to work out why.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
While Voyager studies a binary pulsar, crew members suffer strange afflictions: Chakotay ages rapidly and goes blind, and Neelix breaks out in spots. The Doctor and Torres find odd genetic markers in the crew's DNA. The cause is a team of cloaked alien scientists, the Srivani, who have been secretly experimenting on everyone aboard. When the Doctor is shut down, he leaves a coded message that alters Seven of Nine's vision so she can see the intruders. A crewman dies as a result of the experiments, and Janeway, whose body chemistry the aliens have been manipulating, decides to fight back. Taking the helm herself, she flies Voyager straight between the two pulsars at full speed, gambling that the aliens will flee before the ship is torn apart. They do, Voyager survives, and the Doctor reverses the damage to the crew. Paris and Torres, who suspect their recent attraction was heightened by the experiments, decide to stay together anyway.
- 01The name Srivani comes from the script and is never spoken on screen.
- 02A real binary pulsar, PSR J0737-3039, was discovered in 2003, six years after the episode aired.
- 03Annette Helde had previously appeared in Deep Space Nine's “Visionary”.
