Voyager helps the Nezu, whose world is being battered by asteroids. A local scientist, Dr Vatm, signals that the asteroids are artificial before contact is lost, and Tuvok and Neelix crash their shuttle while looking for him. They join a small group of stranded survivors, including Vatm and the miner Hanjuan, who plan to escape via an orbital tether, a magnetic carriage that climbs to the edge of space. Neelix and Tuvok clash over how to lead the group. During the ascent Vatm dies of poisoning, and Tuvok's investigation exposes Sklar, who is carrying hidden tactical data: the Etanian Order has been aiming the asteroids to drive the Nezu off their planet. Sklar is thrown from the carriage in a struggle. Despite a concussion, Neelix guides the climb past the atmosphere, the group is beamed aboard, and Voyager uses the data to drive off the Etanians. Tuvok and Neelix part with new respect.
- 01Jimmy Diggs's story was inspired by the 1965 film The Flight of the Phoenix.
- 02The orbital tether draws on real space elevator proposals, an idea first suggested by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in 1895.
