Voyager is visiting an outpost of the Mikhal Travelers, and Kes is falling for Zahir, a Mikhal Traveler who invites her to travel with him. Janeway encourages her to take her time before deciding. Meanwhile the Doctor experiments with his own programme, adding personality traits drawn from holographic versions of figures such as Gandhi, Lord Byron, Socrates and T'Pau. Torres warns that the subroutines may clash, and she is right: the darker sides of those personalities combine into a cruel second self. This alter ego attacks Zahir, paralyses Torres when she discovers the truth, and abducts Kes, finally leaping from a cliff with her. Voyager beams them both aboard in mid-fall. Torres restores the Doctor's programme, Kes decides to remain on Voyager, and a chastened Doctor recites part of the Hippocratic Oath, beginning with the promise to do no harm.
