Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Scouting the Nekrit Expanse, Chakotay and Ensign Kaplan answer a distress call and are attacked on the planet below. Kaplan is killed and Chakotay badly wounded. He is nursed by Riley Frazier, who eventually reveals that she and her community are former Borg drones, cut off from the Collective when an electrokinetic storm severed their link. Freed from the hive mind, they have split into warring factions. To save Chakotay, the Cooperative briefly links his mind with theirs, and he is drawn to their vision. Meanwhile Voyager finds a derelict Borg cube, and a drone revived by the Doctor proves how dangerous it still is. The Cooperative asks Janeway to reactivate the cube's neural network so they can link everyone on the planet and end the fighting. She refuses. Using the lingering link, they compel Chakotay to do it anyway, then destroy the cube before it can threaten Voyager. Chakotay is left troubled by how his will was taken.
- 01The first fully computer-generated Borg cube seen on screen, built by Foundation Imaging.
- 02Kenneth Biller drew on the Tower of Babel and the break-up of the Soviet Union for the idea of Borg cut off from the Collective.
- 03The Borg costumes and makeup were carried over from the film Star Trek: First Contact.
