Marooned on Hanon IV, Janeway's crew must find food, shelter and fire with only their wits. Crewman Hogan is killed by a giant burrowing creature, and native hunters seize Kes and Neelix. Aboard Voyager the Doctor learns that Seska's baby is in fact Culluh's, and joins forces with Lon Suder, who must now kill again to save his crewmates. Their sabotage keeps the Kazon off balance, while Paris, who escaped in his shuttle, returns with Talaxian help. Suder overloads the ship's power systems before being shot dead, and the Kazon abandon ship. Seska, trying to reach her baby, is killed in an explosion, and Culluh flees with the child. On the planet a volcanic eruption forces the crew and the natives to help each other, and the natives offer a plant to cure Wildman's sick baby. Voyager finally returns for its stranded crew.
- 01Martha Hackett received script changes less than a day before filming. In an earlier version Seska survived and her baby died.
- 02The Hanonian land eel was the first alien lifeform on Voyager created entirely with CGI.
- 03The planet scenes were filmed on location in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California.
