Seska sends word that she has given birth to Chakotay's child, and that Culluh has rejected the baby. Guided by a vision of his late father, Kolopak, Chakotay resolves to rescue the child, and Janeway agrees to take Voyager into Kazon space. Meanwhile the confined murderer Lon Suder, helped by Tuvok's Vulcan disciplines, is finding peace by breeding orchids. The crew uses holographic decoys to confuse the Kazon, but a wounded Kazon they rescue is a suicide bomber, and his blast cripples key systems. As Culluh's forces board and overwhelm Voyager, Janeway tries to activate the self-destruct, only to find it disabled. Paris slips away in a shuttle under fire to seek help. Seska and Culluh take the ship and maroon the entire crew on a hostile, primitive planet, leaving only the Doctor, and Suder, hidden somewhere aboard, still on Voyager.

  1. 01Michael Piller called the title his “last will and testament”, a call to return to the basics Gene Roddenberry set out. It was his last Voyager script.
  2. 02Voyager's first two-part episode, split across the season break as the second-season finale and third-season premiere.
  3. 03Executive producer Jeri Taylor later called it one of Voyager's best episodes, rivalled as an action-adventure only by the pilot.
