Near a nebula, Tuvok is overwhelmed by a vision of a young girl falling from a cliff, an event he insists never happened. The Doctor diagnoses a repressed memory that is damaging his brain, and Janeway agrees to a series of mind melds to help him face it. Together they relive Tuvok's days as a young ensign aboard the USS Excelsior under Captain Sulu, during the events of “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country”, as Sulu defies orders to help Kirk and McCoy and the ship comes under Klingon attack in a nebula. During the battle Lt Dimitri Valtane is killed, and the falling girl keeps returning. The Doctor and Kes realise the memory was never real: it is a disguise for a telepathic virus, passed to Tuvok by the dying Valtane, which is now spreading to Janeway. It is destroyed with thoron radiation, and Tuvok admits something close to nostalgia.
