When crewman Kenneth Dalby openly defies Tuvok, Janeway approves a Starfleet training course for a handful of former Maquis who are struggling with shipboard discipline, and puts Tuvok in charge. His strict methods go down badly and the trainees walk out, returning only after Chakotay reminds Dalby of Maquis discipline with his fists. Meanwhile, Voyager's bioneural gel packs are failing, and the infection is traced to a cheese Neelix has been making. Tuvok and the Doctor cure the gel packs by overheating them, but this causes power surges around the ship. During the crisis, Tuvok and the trainees are caught in a cargo bay filling with toxic gas. Tuvok orders them to leave behind an unconscious crewmate, then goes back himself and collapses. The trainees work together to rescue him, and Dalby says they will give Starfleet a chance now that Tuvok has shown he can bend the rules.
