Dr Ma'Bor Jetrel, a Haakonian scientist, comes aboard Voyager. He developed the metreon cascade, the weapon that destroyed Rinax and killed more than 300,000 people, Neelix's family among them. Jetrel says he must test Talaxian survivors for metremia, a fatal illness caused by metreon exposure, and persuades Janeway to divert to the Talaxian system. Neelix is consumed by anger, but he also confesses to Kes that he was never the soldier he claimed to be: he hid from the war rather than fight. Neelix then catches Jetrel conducting unauthorised experiments after knocking out the Doctor. In the transporter room, Jetrel reveals his real purpose: he hopes to use Voyager's transporter to regenerate the victims of Rinax. The attempt fails and Jetrel collapses. Before the scientist dies, Neelix finds it in himself to forgive him.
