Worf is dismayed that Alexander shows no interest in the warrior's life. Picard suggests a Klingon festival on Maranga IV to spark the boy's interest. There, father and son are attacked by assassins and saved by K'mtar, a Klingon who claims to be an adviser sent by the House of Mogh. K'mtar pushes hard to turn Alexander into a warrior, but the boy resists, and K'mtar threatens to take him away for training. A clue on an attacker's weapon points to the Duras sisters, Lursa and B'Etor, and to the house of Lursa's unborn son. Then Worf catches K'mtar about to kill the sleeping Alexander. K'mtar reveals he is Alexander himself, from forty years in the future, desperate to change the past so his younger self will save their father from assassination. Worf tells him he will only be happy if Alexander follows the path he chooses for himself.
