A new treaty with Cardassia redraws the border, and Admiral Nechayev orders Picard to evacuate a colony of Native American settlers from Dorvan V, now on the Cardassian side. Their leader Anthwara refuses every alternative world offered, and reminds Picard that his own ancestors played a part in the bloody history of the Pueblo Revolt on Earth. Meanwhile Wesley Crusher, home on leave, is sullen, rude and unhappy at the Academy. A colonist called Lakanta guides him on a vision quest, where he meets his late father, who suggests a different destiny awaits him. When the Cardassians arrive and Picard prepares a forced removal, Wesley sides with the colonists, resigns from Starfleet and helps spark a confrontation. As violence erupts, Wesley freezes time. Lakanta reveals himself as the Traveler and offers to guide Wesley's development. The colonists agree to stay on Dorvan V as Cardassian citizens, and Wesley leaves with the Traveler.
