The Borg return, but they are not the Borg the Enterprise remembers. They fight as individuals, and one encounter leaves Data feeling something new and very unwelcome: anger.

Data passes the time playing poker on the holodeck with Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. A distress call then leads the Enterprise to an outpost where the colonists have been killed by Borg who behave unlike any seen before: they use energy weapons, act as individuals and refer to themselves by name. In the fight, Data feels anger and kills a Borg in a rage. The rest escape through a strange vortex. Admiral Nechayev arrives and criticises Picard for having passed up the chance to destroy the Borg after the Hugh incident. Later, Data interrogates a captured Borg, Crosis, who plays on his new feelings. Data frees the prisoner and flees with him. The Enterprise follows them to an uncharted planet, where Picard leads a large search party. The episode ends as the searchers come face to face with the Borg's leader, Lore, with Data beside him.

  1. 01Stephen Hawking became the first guest star to play himself in any Star Trek series. He even improved one of his humorous lines.
  2. 02Unusually, the episode title and opening credits appear during the cold open, before the title sequence.
  3. 03It is one of only five TNG episodes novelised by Pocket Books, alongside “Encounter at Farpoint”, “Unification”, “Relics” and “All Good Things...”.
