Lore has given Data emotions, and with them turned him against the Federation. Leading the rogue Borg, Lore plans to wipe out all organic life. Picard, Troi and Geordi are captured, and Geordi learns that a carrier wave from Lore is controlling Data's feelings. With most of the crew still searching the planet, Dr Crusher commands the skeleton crew aboard the Enterprise. Using metaphasic shields, she takes the ship into a star and triggers a solar eruption that destroys the pursuing Borg ship. On the surface, Picard and Troi manage to restart Data's ethical program. Ordered by Lore to kill Picard, Data stalls, citing problems with the experiment, and Riker and Worf arrive with Hugh and a band of rebel Borg. Data disables his brother, Hugh takes charge of the Borg, and Data resolves to destroy the emotion chip. Geordi persuades him to keep it.
- 01Ensign Taitt's role was originally written for Reg Barclay, but Dwight Schultz was not available.
- 02James Horan (Lt Barnaby) had played Jo'Bril in “Suspicions”, the episode that introduced the metaphasic shielding used here.
- 03Data's emotion chip returns in the film Star Trek Generations (1994).
