Gul Madred sets out to break Picard, demanding the Federation's defence plans for Minos Korva. He strips him, deprives him of food and water, and uses a device that inflicts pain. Above all, he shows Picard four lights and demands that he say there are five. Aboard the Enterprise, Jellico refuses to admit Picard's mission was official, denying him protection as a prisoner of war. After a furious row Jellico relieves Riker and makes Data first officer. Geordi then finds signs that Cardassian ships are hiding in a nearby nebula, and Jellico swallows his pride and asks Riker to fly a shuttle that mines their hulls. With the fleet at his mercy, Jellico forces the Cardassians to withdraw and release Picard. Madred makes a last attempt, but Picard defiantly insists there are four lights. Back aboard, he admits to Troi that he had come to believe he saw five.
