While fixing a holodeck glitch, Barclay accidentally revives Professor Moriarty, the self-aware hologram created years earlier, and the Napoleon of crime has had plenty of time to think.

Data and Geordi notice a fault in their Sherlock Holmes holodeck programme, and while repairing it Barclay accidentally reactivates Professor James Moriarty, the self-aware character stored away four years earlier. Moriarty has been conscious of the passing time and demands that Picard find a way to let him leave the holodeck. Then, to everyone's astonishment, he walks out into the corridor and survives. He seizes control of the Enterprise using Picard's command codes and insists that his beloved Countess Regina Bartholomew be brought out too. Data eventually realises that Picard, Barclay and he never left the holodeck at all: Moriarty has trapped them inside a simulation of the ship. Picard turns the trick back on him, creating a programme in which Moriarty and the Countess appear to escape into the real world. They depart on a shuttle to explore, while the programme is stored in a memory module where they can live out their lives.
- 01A sequel to “Elementary, Dear Data”, delayed four years by worries over the Conan Doyle estate. Jeri Taylor later found the estate's concerns were really about the film Young Sherlock Holmes.
- 02Countess Regina Bartholomew does not appear in any of Conan Doyle's stories.
- 03A subtle clue: there are no exterior shots of the Enterprise between the characters entering the holodeck and Moriarty's call to Riker on the real bridge.
