The Enterprise carries Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan to conclude a treaty with the Legarans, the last mission before his retirement. His human wife, Perrin, travels with him. At a chamber music recital arranged by Picard, Sarek is seen with a tear on his face. Soon crew members begin snapping at each other, and a brawl breaks out in Ten Forward. Crusher and Troi conclude that Sarek has Bendii syndrome, a rare illness of elderly Vulcans that erodes emotional control and spills those feelings telepathically onto the people around him. Sarek angrily denies it, then breaks down. With the negotiations at stake, Perrin proposes a solution: Sarek will mind meld with someone who can hold his emotions while he completes the talks, and Picard volunteers. Picard endures a storm of the ambassador's feelings, including his regret at never openly showing love for Amanda, Spock and Perrin. The treaty is completed, and the two men part with deep mutual respect.
