After a trade conference on Betazed, Riker and Troi take shore leave there while the Enterprise studies a nearby nebula. Lwaxana Troi, keen to see them reunited, joins them, but the Ferengi DaiMon Tog has his own designs on Lwaxana. When she rejects him again, Tog kidnaps all three and takes them aboard his ship, the Krayton, where his doctor, Farek, plans to probe Lwaxana's telepathic mind. Lwaxana plays up to Tog to buy time, while Riker escapes from his cell and tampers with the ship's systems to send out a signal. Wesley recognises the strange interference pattern and gives the Enterprise the Krayton's heading, though staying to help means waiting another year for Starfleet Academy. Lwaxana agrees to stay with Tog if the others are freed. Picard then plays a jealous lover, declaiming Shakespeare's sonnets and threatening the Krayton, and the alarmed Tog hands her back. Picard rewards Wesley with a field promotion to full ensign.
