To save the poisoned water supply of Beta Agni II, the Enterprise obtains a rare, unstable compound from the trader Kivas Fajo. It cannot be beamed, so Data ferries it by shuttle. Before his final trip Data is abducted by Fajo, and the shuttle explodes, and the crew believe he is dead. Fajo, a collector of rare objects, wants Data as his latest exhibit. Data refuses to cooperate until Fajo threatens to kill his assistant Varria with a banned disruptor. The crew mourn and Worf takes over Data's post, but La Forge and Wesley spot details that do not add up, and they discover Fajo poisoned the water himself as bait. Varria helps Data escape, but Fajo kills her. Data takes the disruptor and aims at Fajo, who taunts him that he cannot kill. As Data fires, the Enterprise beams him away, and his answer leaves his intent unclear. Fajo is arrested and his stolen collection returned.
