The Enterprise is carrying two Antedean delegates, who travel in a self-induced trance, to a conference on Pacifica. It also collects Lwaxana Troi, and Deanna learns that her mother is going through the Phase, a stage of Betazoid life that sharply raises the sex drive. Lwaxana is determined to find a husband. Her first target is Picard, who survives one dinner by inviting Data along to talk at length, then hides in the holodeck as private eye Dixon Hill. Lwaxana turns to Riker and announces their engagement, then follows Picard into his 1940s fantasy, where she takes a shine to the holographic bartender, Rex. As the ship arrives at Pacifica, Lwaxana suddenly accuses the Antedeans of being assassins. They deny it, but scans confirm they are carrying explosives, and the plot is foiled. Lwaxana leaves without a husband but satisfied with her part in saving the conference.
- 01Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, a Star Trek fan, plays an Antedean. He shaved off his beard for the make-up and was happy with a small part.
- 02Robert O'Reilly, seen briefly as a holographic gangster, later played the Klingon leader Gowron.
- 03The script revisits elements from two earlier episodes: “Haven”, which introduced Lwaxana and Mr Homn, and “The Big Goodbye”.
