An antique distress call leads the Enterprise to a forgotten colony of rustic Irish settlers, and to a second lost colony with a very different secret.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
An old-style distress signal brings the Enterprise to Bringloid V, where a colony founded by survivors of the early colony ship SS Mariposa faces deadly solar flares. The settlers, led by the boisterous Danilo Odell and his no-nonsense daughter Brenna, live a deliberately simple, low-tech life, and they come aboard complete with their livestock. Meanwhile Worf collapses with a Klingon childhood illness and thanks Pulaski for her discretion with a tea ceremony, which she can only share after taking an antidote. The Odells reveal that a second Mariposa colony lies nearby. It is technologically advanced, but its people are all clones of five survivors of a crash landing, and generations of copying have left them near genetic collapse. Refused donors, the Mariposans secretly take DNA from Riker and Pulaski, who find and destroy the clones grown from them. Pulaski proposes merging the two colonies into one viable population, and both leaders reluctantly agree.
- 01Originally titled “Send in the Clones”.
- 02Melinda M. Snodgrass meant it as a commentary on immigration and against xenophobia. Maurice Hurley suggested making the farming colonists Irish.
- 03The Corps of Engineers ebook “Out of the Cocoon” revisits the merged colony eleven years later, finding the union less smooth than Picard hoped.
