Scotty's bid to extend the transporter's range goes badly, and very fuzzily, wrong, leaving a startled Spock to hold the ship together when Orion raiders strike.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Scotty prepares an experiment to extend the transporter's range. La'An has just ended her relationship with Spock, who invites T'Pring to visit the Enterprise to help him recommit to logic. Watching from a shuttlecraft, Spock sees the ship briefly vanish and reappear, and returns to find everyone aboard transformed into felt puppets. As the only person able to work most of the controls, he must keep the ship running. Then an Orion crew boards and easily seizes the bridge. Pike devises a plan that makes the most of the crew's new bodies, and a chaotic mass attack distracts the Orions while Spock drains the oxygen from the bridge, knocking out the intruders and himself. Scotty reverses the effect, though not before the crew enjoy floating in open space without suits. Spock then wakes to find T'Pring beside him: it was all a dream he had while unconscious after the experiment.
- 01The puppet versions of the crew were made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
- 02Transporter accidents are a Star Trek staple, going back to the original series' “The Enemy Within”.
