As the crew wind down before their weekend, a sudden space phenomenon tears into the Enterprise and the clock starts ticking for everyone aboard.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
The crew are finishing their shift before the weekend, and in sickbay Chapel learns that M'Benga has arranged for his predecessor, Dr Phil Boyce, to potentially replace him. Then the Enterprise hits a neutrino wormhole slipstream that sets off cascading emergencies. Pike is incapacitated after getting the shields up, communications fail, Scotty is trapped in a turbolift, Una breaks her leg disabling a gravity malfunction, engineering is flooded with radiation, and M'Benga is pinned beneath medical equipment. With the ship minutes from destruction, Spock and La'An attempt a perilous spacewalk to collect vital sensor readings, and La'An rescues Spock when an ion pod explodes. Chapel and M'Benga devise an experimental procedure using neutrinos found in the slipstream, which also supplies the power to stabilise the ship. Everyone survives, Chapel and M'Benga settle their differences, and Pelia encourages Scotty on his way to becoming a miracle worker.
- 01Brian Markinson plays Dr Phil Boyce, Pike's doctor in the original pilot “The Cage”, later reused in “The Menagerie”.
- 02The ejected ion pod is a nod to the original series episode “Court Martial”.
- 03Much of the episode plays out in real time, with split screens and a ticking clock in the style of the series “24”.
