Under the Cloak of War

The Enterprise is ordered to carry Ambassador Dak'Rah, a former Klingon general who defected to the Federation and is celebrated for killing his own officers after they ordered attacks on civilians. M'Benga and Chapel, who served together at a field hospital on the planet J'Gal during the Klingon war, are troubled by his presence. Pike asks them to join a diplomatic dinner, and flashbacks reveal the horrors of their time on J'Gal. Dak'Rah asks M'Benga to stand beside him as a symbol of reconciliation. Alone with him, M'Benga reveals that he knows the truth: Dak'Rah ordered the massacres himself, and it was M'Benga, on a secret solo mission, who killed the officers whose deaths Dak'Rah claims as his own. The confrontation turns violent and M'Benga kills Dak'Rah. Chapel supports his account, and the death is ruled self-defence, leaving M'Benga alone with what he has done.
