In the 24th century, Ensign Brad Boimler of the USS Cerritos is pulled through an ancient portal and arrives, in live-action form, aboard Pike's Enterprise more than a century earlier. Starstruck by crew he knows from history, Boimler struggles to contain his excitement or avoid spoiling the future while Pike's team works on getting him home. Ensign Beckett Mariner then comes through to rescue him, but her trip drains the portal's power. The crew find the rare material needed to power it in a piece of an earlier Enterprise, but Orion traders complicate matters. Boimler helps recover supplies that were accidentally traded away, and Pike strikes a deal with the Orion captain by offering him the credit for discovering the portal. Boimler and Mariner say their goodbyes and return safely to their own time.
