The Enterprise and the USS Farragut are helping at a new deuterium refinery. Uhura begins hearing strange noises and seeing terrifying images, including the deaths of her parents and of the late engineer Hemmer. M'Benga suspects exhaustion. Lt James Kirk of the Farragut, visiting his brother Sam, is the one person who takes her seriously. When the refinery is sabotaged, a crewman, Lt Ramon, turns out to be suffering the same visions, and he escapes from sickbay and nearly kills himself and Uhura. Uhura and Kirk realise that the visions are attempts at communication by beings who live in the deuterium and are being killed by the refinery. Pike orders the facility destroyed to protect them. Uhura and Kirk toast to not letting death win, and she introduces him to the Enterprise's science officer, Spock.
