SAM, a photonic cadet sent by the Kasq to study organic life, is told by her Makers to drop distractions like music and take the seminar “Confronting the Unexplainable”. She fixes on the disappearance of Benjamin Sisko, a fellow emissary, but offends Bajoran students by dismissing their beliefs. Meanwhile Ake, with help from the Doctor and Jett Reno, coaches Kelrec for an important Alpherati dignitary; they fall out over Ake leaving Starfleet years ago, then make peace. The Makers warn SAM to find answers or return home for good. At the Sisko Museum she finds Jake's recordings, and Caleb tweaks her programming so she can feel drunk at a bar Sisko once knew, which ends in a fight with War College cadets. Her teacher, Professor Illa, gives her Jake's unpublished book Anslem, and Jake helps her understand his father. SAM decides to be an emissary in her own way, and Illa reveals she is the Dax symbiont's host.
