As the Athena sets out on its first space voyage of the year, the Doctor prepares the cadets for a debate competition, which terrifies Jay-Den. Ake and Lura Thok tell him that a Klingon ship carrying survivors of the last eight Houses has crashed, and no one knows if his family survived. Flashbacks to Krios Prime show his father's anger at his pacifism, the death of his supportive brother Thar, and a hunt after which his family left him behind. The Federation offers the Klingons a new world, Faan Alpha, but Ake's old flame Obel Wochak refuses charity. Jay-Den clashes with Caleb and the debate is halted. Thok, herself part Klingon, suggests his father missed his shot on purpose to set him free. Jay-Den argues for a Klingon solution to a Klingon problem. Ake and Vance stage a battle at Faan Alpha and surrender it, letting the Klingons claim it with honour. Jay-Den's family is safe there.
