Cadets from Starfleet Academy and the rival War College train together aboard the USS Miyazaki, a derelict ship whose crew was lost a century ago while testing an experimental drive. While Caleb, SAM, Jay-Den, B'Avi and Kyle work to restore power, a cloaked vessel delivers the Furies, savage alien hybrids who take cadets hostage and demand a ransom. Commander Tomov is killed. Ake reluctantly asks her old adversary Nus Braka for advice, and he recommends sonic weapons, while the USS Sargasso is diverted from Starbase J-19 Alpha to help. Aboard the Miyazaki, Tarima removes her telepathic inhibitor and turns her full power on the Furies, saving her friends but falling into a coma. B'Avi dies shielding Caleb. The rescue succeeds, but it was Braka's plan all along: with the Sargasso gone, he and the Venari Ral raid the unguarded station, killing many, and he sends Ake a gloating message.
- 01The title comes from Shakespeare's King Lear. The animated series episode “How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth” also took its title from the play.
- 02The Furies are part lynar, the bat-like creatures from Celtis III seen in The Next Generation episode “Chain of Command, Part I”.
