With infected Starfleet ships turning on one another, the crew realise the only answer is to destroy the Protostar, and Rok works out that triggering the proto-drive at the right moment will scatter the blast safely across space. Dal offers to stay behind, but Hologram Janeway insists on going in his place, assuring him she has a backup. The crew build an escape shuttle and say goodbye, and Hologram Janeway engages the drive. The explosion disables the infected fleet, and a recorded message reveals that her program had grown too large to copy. A month later, the blast has reopened the anomaly that stranded Chakotay, allowing him to contact Starfleet. At a tribunal, Admiral Janeway defends the young crew. Charges are dropped but the Academy is not yet an option, so they become warrant officers in training under her command. Gwyn leaves to try to save Solum, sharing a farewell with Dal, and Janeway hints at bigger plans.
- 01Star Trek's real-life science adviser, Dr Erin Macdonald, voices Dr MacDonald, a scientist who advises Rok to look into xenobiology.
- 02The anomaly that stranded Chakotay is the interspatial flexure first seen in the Voyager episode “Counterpoint”.
- 03Jankom proudly calls himself a miracle worker, a nod to Montgomery Scott's famous reputation.
