Locked out of their ship as the Protostar closes on the Dauntless, the crew try to warn Admiral Janeway about the Living Construct. Zero links Dal telepathically with the admiral, but a burst of phaser fire triggers a mind swap: Dal wakes in Janeway's body aboard the Dauntless, while Janeway finds herself in Dal's. Dal bluffs his way through life as an admiral under the suspicious eyes of Asencia, Dr Noum and Commander Tysess, and gets unexpected help from the Diviner. On the Protostar, Janeway hears the crew's story and uses her authority to restore Hologram Janeway, removing the Construct's corruption. She also learns that Starfleet's laws on augmentation would keep Dal out. Swapping back means making contact during a daring spacewalk, relying on Dal's partial Organian DNA, and a well-timed phaser blast finally returns each mind to its own body. The ships then reach a system packed with Starfleet vessels, and Janeway is confined to the Dauntless brig.
- 01Admiral Janeway mentions once being turned into a salamander, a nod to the Voyager episode “Threshold”.
- 02The merged warp fields that allow the swap echo a similar manoeuvre in the Enterprise episode “Divergence”.
- 03Dal's genetic make-up is revealed to include Organian DNA. The Organians also appeared in the Enterprise episode “Observer Effect”.
