After running simulation after simulation, the crew conclude there is no safe way out of the Neutral Zone and settle down to share ice cream. But back in their quarters, characters from their holodeck programs start appearing, and Hologram Janeway confirms they are trapped inside the holodeck with the controls unresponsive. To reach the exit they must solve a mystery from Zero's detective adventure, moving through each crew member's programme in turn: Jankom's brawl with a gang of Dr Noums, Murf's black-and-white jazz club, Dal's pirate ship and more. Eventually they realise the real puzzle is why they are trapped at all. The answer is a hidden subroutine planted by the Living Construct, which drives Hologram Janeway to get the ship to Starfleet whatever the crew want. Unaware of what she is doing, she uses Dal's command codes to lock the crew out of the controls and sets course for Federation space, straight towards the waiting Dauntless.
