The Diviner sends the crew a message: bring the Protostar back to Tars Lamora within a day, or the miners they left behind will die. The ship has enough power for only one jump, and help from the Federation might not arrive in time. Dal sees another no-win scenario, but Gwyn convinces him they can find a way, so the crew don new Starfleet uniforms and head back. Caught in the Rev-12's tractor beam, Dal tries to bargain, and the Diviner demands Gwyn as well as the ship; she agrees to go with him. Once aboard the Protostar, the Diviner takes control, corrupts the Janeway hologram and orders Drednok to destroy the Rev-12's power generators, dooming the miners. But the crew expected treachery: they had removed the proto-core and hidden it inside Murf. As the Diviner discovers the ship cannot leave, the crew, wearing thruster packs, race against time to save the miners.
