The Shrike attacks, injuring Shaw, who hands command of the Titan to Riker. Picard confronts Beverly, who explains that she hid Jack from him to keep their son safe from the dangers that follow Picard. Riker tries to escape the nebula, but Vadic's portal technology blocks him. Picard urges him to lure the Shrike into a trap; Riker insists that protecting the crew means running. Jack and Seven work out that Vadic is tracking a gas leak and catch an ensign sabotaging the ship, but he turns out to be a Changeling and escapes. Aboard La Sirena, Raffi and Worf seize a suspect in the M'talas attack who is also a Changeling, part of a faction that has fought the Federation since the Dominion War. Persuaded by Picard, Riker opens fire, but a portal turns the Titan's weapons back on itself. Riker blames Picard and orders him off the bridge as the crippled ship drifts towards a gravity well.
