Picard stops the warship Shrike from beaming the young man off the Eleos, but it seizes the Eleos in a tractor beam. Seven talks Shaw into intervening, and Beverly, still unconscious, is taken to the Titan's sickbay. The Shrike's captain, a bounty hunter called Vadic, says the young man, Jack Crusher, is a wanted criminal and demands that he be handed over. Shaw locks Jack up and prepares to give him up to save his ship, ignoring the protests of Picard and Riker. On M'talas Prime, Raffi defies her handler's order to drop the case and meets the Ferengi crime boss Sneed, who nearly kills her before her handler, Worf, arrives and kills him. Jack escapes and tries to surrender himself to protect his mother, but when Riker brings Beverly to the bridge, Picard realises that Jack is his son. Picard refuses to give him up, and Shaw orders the Titan into the nebula, with a delighted Vadic in pursuit.
