In 2401 the small ship Eleos is attacked, and the injured Dr Beverly Crusher sends a coded distress call to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, warning him to trust no one and to keep Starfleet out of it. Encouraged by Laris, Picard turns instead to his old first officer, Will Riker. The pair stage a surprise inspection of the USS Titan-A, hoping to persuade its prickly captain, Liam Shaw, to change course. Shaw refuses, but his first officer, Seven of Nine, quietly overrides him and takes the ship towards Beverly. Meanwhile Raffi Musiker, working undercover for Starfleet Intelligence on M'talas Prime, hunts for a stolen portal weapon but cannot stop it destroying a Starfleet facility. Crossing to the Eleos by shuttle, Picard and Riker find Beverly in a stasis pod, guarded by a young man who says he is her son. Then a huge warship emerges from the nebula.
